5 teams participated in the KSBA selection trials for Khosla trophy in the Summer Nationals at Pune in Apr '09.
In the initial round robin of 14x5 rounds amongst 5 teams on 21st Feb, Rajeev's team topped with 76 VPs followed by Rajamani's team
with 65 VPs. Gupta's team (A.S Gupta, Dr Vasantha, Ms Satyavathi Vasantha, R.V.Ramani and V.Krishnan) finished 3rd with 59 VPs
followed by Sridhara's team (B.N Jamkhandi, D.R Sridhara, N.Ningaiah, C.B.B. Sarma and Dr Kini) and Canara Union (Narayanan and team).
Rajeev's team and Rajamani's team qualified for the finals playoff. Rajamani started with a carry over of 4.3 IMPs on account of beating
Rajeev's team by 13 IMPs (1/3rd of margin since Rajeev's team finished above Rajamani's team in the round robin) in the direct match of the round robin.
In the 12x3 finals on 22nd Feb morning, Rajeev's team won the first set by 25 IMPs to establish a lead of 21 IMPs. The second set
finished with 27 IMPs to both teams. In the 3rd set, Rajamani's team fought gallantly and recovered 12 IMPs (19-31). There were a few opportunities for Rajamani's team (V.S Rajamani, B.P.S Pai, M.D Rao,
Vasanth Kolathaya and Dr Nanda) to even win the match in the last set. Rajeev's team held on to win a close match by 9 IMPs (74-65).
Many congratulations to the winning team comprising of Rajeeva Parasar (Capt), B.K Satyen, S.K. Iyengar and Kapil Bhalla. This year
Karnataka has 2 teams in Summer Nationals since S.Zone winners, an all Karnataka team (Manoj Kr Nair, Subransu Patnaik, C.Krishna and Godwin Jayasheelan) also get a direct entry to Summer Nationals. Let
us good luck to both teams and hopefully one or both win laurels for the state.
A special words of appreciation and round of applause for the sporting gesture shown by Gupta's team for agreeing to change the
draw and play only 10 boards in the first round of initial round robin so that Sridhara's team need not forfeit their first round match.
KSBA wishes to thank Canara Union management and bridge players for the venue (separate rooms for each table!), hospitality and support for this 2 day event at club premises.
