Tournament Report of KSBA State Championships at Mysore - Reported by R Venkat

Initial Swiss league of 5 rounds of 12 boards determined the 4 qualifiers for the Finals Round Robin. Oindrilla-Wrillena, Bangalore topped the league with 113 VPs, followed by Sharma's, Bangalore on 93 VPs and Krish, Chennai on 86 VPs. There was a tie on 84 VPs for the last qualifying spot. Subhadra's, Bangalore pipped Tricks, Coimbatore (T.R Krishnan, Sridhar, Suresh Kamat and C.Alagappan) on VP quotient tie-breaker to secure their place in the finals Round Robin.
In the 16 x 3 Finals Round Robin on Mar 22nd, Oindrilla-Wrillena (Debgiri Sanyal, K.N Shyamsundar, D.Vijay and R.Venkatesh) scored 66 VPs to win the main event. Krish (R.Sreekrishnan, S.Krishnan, L.Subramanian, Periasamy) scored 41 VPs to finish 2nd. Sharma's (S.L.Sharma, S.Narasimhan, C.K.Krishna, V.S Rajamani) scored 39 VPs to finish 3rd and Subhadra's team (Ms Subhadra Rao, Ms Nirmala Saboo, Himanshu Joshi, Mithun Mukherjee) scored 32 VPs to take the 4th position.
Total of 16 teams played a 2 session Board-A-Match comprising of 45 (30+15) boards in parallel with the team finals. Gupta's, Bangalore (A.S. Gupta, V.Krishnan, Dr Vasanth, Ms Satyavathi Vasantha) won the event followed by Rising Stars, Chennai (Madhukar, Ms Leela Iyengar, Guthi and Prashant) in second place and Tricks, Coimbatore in 3rd place (T.R Krishnan, Sridhar, C Alagappan and Suresh Kamat).
Pairs event kicked off on 21st Mar evening with 41 pairs playing a 3 session event comprising of 60 (21+19+20) boards. The reigning champions, C.Alagappan from Trichy and Suresh Kamat from Goa won the event ahead of D.Vijay from Chennai and R.Venkatesh in second place. Pradeep Kulkarni-Durgadas came in 3rd followed by C.K Krishna-S.L.Sharma and R.V Ramani-Vasanth Kolathaya who rounded off the prize winners.
The event, co-sponsored by State Bank of Mysore, was conducted in exemplary fashion by Mysore District Bridge Association (MDBA). The hospitality (excellent lunch and cocktail dinner on all days) and arrangements provided by MDBA, led by chief organisers Hiranniah and Murthy, ably supported by Cosmopolitan Club staff was exemplary and appreciated by all and sundry. Curtain was brought down on this edition of state championships with prize distribution and High-Tea at 5 PM on Mar 23rd.
B.N Jamkhandi directed the tournament efficiently and was supported by tireless efforts of our secretary Pradeep Kulkarni on all aspects. The format of all the 3 events ensured that sufficient no of boards were played before determining the prize winners.
The only sour note was news from Bangalore, of the sad demise of our veteran bridge player, tournament director and dramatist, N.S Dani in the midst of the tournament. Shri Dani was originally supposed to direct this event and he couldn't make it because of ill-health.
